Life will never be the same

It pretty much goes without saying that life will never be the same for an incredible number of people whose lives were not just “affected” but have been essentially devastated by one of the unprecedented number of recent disasters worldwide.  2017 has seen not just damaging but deadly hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, mudslides, wildfires, droughts, and violent acts of terrorism on top of the accidents and diseases that kill and injure our loved ones and ourselves.  I can’t imagine there is anyone anywhere who has been completely unscathed by these events.

It seems almost indifferent and insensitive to do “business as usual” in the face of these catastrophes, especially with the lengthy and challenging recovery ahead for so many.  However, I believe that it is essential that those who are able to pick up the pieces do their best to do just that for the sake of those who cannot.  Here in the Houston area in the path of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation, there has been a tremendous disruption of the housing market, and many families have been involuntarily thrust into the market for either temporary quarters or a new home.  In spite of all the turmoil created, those of us in the real estate business remain available to assist customers buying and selling, endeavoring to make the process as stress-free as possible in the face of the apparent (and real) chaos.

The Houston Association of Realtors provided this surprising report:

Battered by Hurricane Harvey during the final week of August, the Houston real estate market demonstrated its ‘Houston Strong’ resiliency during the four weeks that followed with a rebound in home sales and the strongest rental activity of all time.

"I don’t think anyone expected to see home sales in positive territory this soon after a natural disaster of Harvey’s magnitude, but the September report speaks volumes about the incredible resiliency of the Houston real estate market,” said HAR Chair Cindy Hamann. “We are still mindful of the terrible property losses suffered across the region …”

In spite of several days of lost activity at the end of August and the beginning of September, all of the parties to making this work -- the lenders, title companies, inspectors, appraisers, real estate agents, brokerages  and others -- put in the extra effort to get the job done.

I am proud to be part of this powerful Houston real estate community.  If you or anyone you know has been forced into the market or had previous reasons to plan a move that have not changed, I hope you will contact me.  I stand ready to assist in buying or selling – or both – here in the Houston area or anywhere.
